| Info | Wagnon served as a state representative from 1983-94, chairing the House Taxation Committee. She ran for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1994, bowing to Jim Slattery.
From 1995 to 1997, she served as executive director of Kansas Families for Kids, seeking to privatize state adoption.
From 1997-2001, she was Mayor of Topeka. In 2003, she was appointed to the Cabinet of Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
"I guess what I liked about it was I thought it was important work," Wagnon said. "I could go home and realize I had done something important and useful to an individual or to the community."
An observer of city government said the mayor's eagerness may work against her with some Topeka City Council members.
"She's extremely energetic, and she wants to get things done," said Loran Smith, political science professor at Washburn University. "She wants to get things done now."
Her willingness to move fast in making changes may alarm council members who want to move more slowly
