Info | MERRITT, Edwin Albert, a Representative from New York; born in Pierrepont, St. Lawrence County, N.Y., July 25, 1860; attended the common schools; graduated from Potsdam Normal School in 1879 and from Yale College in 1884; deputy consul general in London in 1885; connected with various business enterprises in Potsdam; member of the board of supervisors 1896-1903; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1902 and commenced practice in Potsdam, N.Y.; member of the New York state assembly 1902-1912, minority leader from 1908, and served as speaker in 1912; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of George R. Malby; reelected to the two succeeding Congresses, served from November 5, 1912, until his death, before the close of the Sixty-third Congress (November 5, 1912-December 4, 1914); died in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, N.Y., December 4, 1914; interment in Pierrepont Hill Cemetery, Pierrepont, N.Y.
