InfoI was born and raised in central Pennsylvania along with three brothers. Both of my parents had 8th grade educations. My Father worked as an auto mechanic, long hours at minimal wage. Minimal wage back then was $1.60 hour. He was the one that would open the door up early in the morning and close-up in the evening. Sometimes he would have to take a service truck out in the middle of the night to work on an 18-wheeler that had broken down. Everyone who knew my Father would say he was the only person that they would trust to work on their vehicle because he was honest, he could fix anything, and at a fair price. If it was not a school night, the family would ride along just to spend some personal time with him. My Father was also known to always have a smile on his face and people said they never heard him complain about anything. We never could afford a new car. The used cars that we had were truly “clunkers” that my Father would repair. On Sunday afternoons my family would take a long car ride in the country and later stop for ice cream. When he could, my Father loved to go hunting. He taught his sons how to shoot and hunt. My Mother wanted to raise the only daughter in a tradional manner, so I was not allowed to go hunting. I do remember going fishing with my father and brothers. It is important for me to point out that my Father was born with a deformed left hand but it never got in the way of his accomplishing anything. My Father died of colon cancer and heart disease in 1991.

My Mother was a housewife and sometimes cleaned houses or other jobs to make extra money. She was a Christian and always would see that her children attended church. She could always be heard singing gospel songs while cleaning the house or cooking. I still remember her tucking me in bed every night and saying our prayers out loud together. Although my family had little material assets by other people’s standards, she would always take care of even the less fortunate. My Father would always joke that he would never know when the next stranger would be sitting across from us at the dinner table. My Mother died from dementia (probably mixed Alzheimer’s and vascular) in May 2009. Even though there may have been times when she could not remember me, she always remembered God and spoke of her faith. She was a great role model in teaching us how to live and how to die.

To this day, my brother and I just shake our heads and wonder how our parents managed to raise four children on their income. My brothers still live in Pennsylvania and love to hunt and fish; and they have passed on the tradition to their children. They are Christians and read their bibles. My brothers must be the ones that President Obama referred to when he said the people in Pennsylvania just cling to their guns and bibles. Personally, I think that is a good combination.

I always wanted to be a nurse and consequently became the first person in my family to go to college. My parents tried to talk me into enrolling in a local hospital program because they did not know anything about the college experience. I went to my high school guidance counselor and obtained information about college loans and grants. I completed the applications including the financial statements which were easy to do considering my parents did not have any banking accounts nor investments. I was accepted at Duquesne University School of Nursing in Pittsburgh PA. I walked into a bank and set up my first checking account. After graduation, I wanted to make it a point of repaying my college loans, so I relied on public transportation to get to work rather than purchasing a car.

After college came marriage and I am still married to the same wonderful man for 30 years. My husband was a military brat and his father is a retired military officer with over 31 years of service (including being in 3 wars – WWII, the Korean War, and Viet Nam) in both the Army and Air Force. My brother-in-law is currently in the Army with over 20 years of service.

Early in our marriage I worked at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center full time so I could attend graduate school part time. I completed my master’s thesis and the oral defense while I was 9 months pregnant! We are very proud of our son who has recently graduated from college and is now working on his master’s degree.

My husband became an officer in the Air Force and we have had the opportunity to live in Germany and Boston. Our assignment to Scott Air Force Base is what brought us to this area and we have remained since his retirement.

Wherever we lived, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work as a nurse. Most of my experience is in research and clinical psychiatric nursing but I have worked in neurological research as well. My professional experience has provided me with the opportunity to conduct my own small studies, and publish in professional journals. When we lived at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany, I was in charge of the Health Promotions Committee and in 1991 won the Best Small Base Program in the Air Force.

I want to share that I come from a humble background and like all of you, have worked hard at my accomplishments. My background will always influence me in the decisions I make and I will always strive to do the right thing by all of you. I believe my roots have given me family values, a prayerful life, a love of God and country, and the self-determination to set goals and be successful.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about me. I want to learn about you and your concerns. Please email me at info@votekormos.com.
