InfoFirst MP elected to the Canadian Parliament as a member of the Reform Party of Canada

Has announced retirement.

Deborah Grey was born July 1st, 1952, in Vancouver, British Columbia to Mansell and Joyce Grey. She graduated from Prince of Wales High School in 1970, receiving the Citizenship Award for the all-round female, the Female Athletic Award, and the Gold (Medal) Pin for drama.

Ms. Grey continued her studies at the Burrard Inlet Bible Institute, graduating in 1973 and accepting a staff position there for the following year.

Between 1974 and 1978, Ms. Grey pursued studies in Sociology and English at Trinity Western College in Langley, British Columbia and at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. She earned a Double Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1978 and added a Bachelor of Education (After Degree) in 1979.

Ms. Grey accepted her first teaching position at Albertas Frog Lake Indian Reserve in 1979. The following year, she transferred to Dewberry, Alberta, where she taught junior and senior high school until 1989. During this time, she opened her home and heart to several aboriginal children as a foster parent.

Ms. Greys long-standing interest in politics was stirred into action by the emergence of the Reform Party of Canada in 1987. Encouraged by a friend to consider running as a candidate in the upcoming federal election, and recognized as a formidable communicator by party organizers, she took the plunge into political life, finishing fourth in the riding of Beaver River, Alberta on November 21st, 1988.

When a by-election in Beaver River was called to fill the seat left vacant by the Progressive Conservative member who had passed away just five days after the general election, Ms. Grey was once again on the campaign trail. On March 13th, 1989, at the age of 36, Deborah Grey became the first Reform Party of Canada Member of Parliament elected to the House of Commons. She was re-elected to Parliament in Beaver River in October 1993 and again in Edmonton North in 1997 when the Reform Party gained Official Opposition status.

Deborah served as Reform Party Caucus Chairman from November 1993 to March 2000, as well as Deputy Parliamentary Leader from June 1995 to March 2000. She also served as joint-chairman of the Standing Joint Senate-House Committee on the Library of Parliament, as well as on the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons With Disabilities, and the Sub-Committee on Private Members Business. She was appointed Official Opposition Critic for Human Resources Development in June 1998.

On March 27th, 2000, when Preston Manning stepped down from his position as Leader of the Official Opposition to campaign for the leadership of the new Canadian Alliance, Deborah assumed the responsibilities of Leader of the Official Opposition (Interim). She served in this capacity until new Alliance Leader Stockwell Day's election to Parliament in September 2000. On August 1, 2000 Deborah was appointed Official Opposition Critic for Canadian Heritage until December 2000. She was then re-elected Caucus Chairman and appointed as Deputy Parliamentary Leader. Deborah resigned from her caucus roles effective April 24, 2001.

In July 2001, Deborah and 11 of her fellow Canadian Alliance MPs formed the Democratic Representative Caucus. In September 2001, she and 7 of her DRC colleagues formed a coalition caucus with the Progressive Conservatives and she served as its Chairman. In April 2002, Deborah re-joined the Canadian Alliance Caucus.

Deborah married Lewis Larson on August 7, 1993, and their home is in Edmonton, Alberta. Together, they treasure the private time they spend touring on their motorcycles and participating actively in their extended families and local church. Ms. Grey also enjoys drama, water sports, hiking, camping, and archery, and is an avid sports fan, particularly enjoying hockey, football, curling, and baseball.
