InfoVernon Woodrow Humphrey

Vernon W. Humphrey is a retired Infantry officer. He served two tours in Viet Nam, first as an adviser to a Viet Namese Infantry unit, and later as an Infantry company commander. He has two Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and several other decorations.

While in the Army, he completed his Bachelor's Degree in History and earned both Master's and Specialist's degrees in Education

After retiring from the Army as a Major in 1985, Vernon worked in a company specializing in training, military doctrine and organization. He developed the training program for the Army's Motorized Brigade, trained elements of the Singapore Army, and developed techniques for the US Army for fighting in a Chemical and Biological environment.

He also developed and conducted training in commercial applications, notably General Motors, where he spent a year and a half near Detroit.

He was active in politics, and served for several years as Vice Chairman of the York County, Virginia Republican committee. He worked on several civic projects, including bringing sewer systems to outlying areas of the county.

Vernon was born in Athens, Texas on December 2, 1941, and attended schools in Louisiana, Texas, Peru and Egypt. He graduated from high school in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas, where his father, a retired oil man, had a ranch. He attended Arkansas Tech and the University of Oklahoma, then left college and joined the Army, where he was commissioned through Officer Candidate School.

His wife, the former Jane Morton, served as an Army nurse during that period, stationed at Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill. They have two children, Helen, 35, and Carolyn, 30, and one grandchild, Cassandra, born in February 2003.

Vernon and Jane bought property south of Mountain View in 1969, when he returned home from his second tour of duty in Viet Nam. They spent many years dreaming of returning there and settling down.

He and Jane came home to Mountain View in 1999, building a house on the property they bought some 30 years earlier. Jane continues to work part time as a nurse for the Home Health service.
