Relocated to NYC in 1890 and attended Columbia Univ. Law School.

Admitted to the NYC Bar 1891

Asst District Attorney, NYC, 1892-1897.

Married Martha Bagby 1898; no children. She was the daughter of the State Librarian of Virginia, George W. Bagby.

Partner, Battle & Marshall (law firm) 1901-1911 and the law firm O'Gorman, Battle and Marshall thereafter with other alternate names

Candidate for NYC District Attorney 1909

Delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1920, 1928, 1936, 1940

Received the vote of the North Carolina delegation for US President at the 1924 DNC on one ballot

In 1940, the American Hebrew Magazine gave its annual Medal for the Promotion of Better Understanding Between Christians and Jews in America to Battle, who was serving as chairman of the Council against Intolerance in America. [NYT 2/21/1941]

Died 4/29/1949, Fredricksburg VA. Battle was travelling to his country estate in Orange County VA when he suffered a heart attack. Taken to a hospital in Fredricksburg, he died there the same day. He was buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond VA.
