Info | Roger Wolcott Jessup served on the Board of Supervisors for six terms. He was elected to the office in 1932, and re-elected in 1936, 1940, 1944, 1948, and 1952.
Jessup was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Nov. 5, 1889, and was a descendant of Daniel Webster. Jessup grew up in his hometown and later attended Oregon State College, and eventually moved to Los Angeles.
In 1919 Jessup married Marguerite Rice and founded a family dairy business in Glendale. "Jessup Certified Farms” started with just 40 cows, but quickly grew. His quality dairy products brought acclaim to Glendale as one of the largest individually owned dairies in the world. By the 1960s, more than 1,200 cows were milked twice a day on the 27-acre dairy.
He also created Jessup Breeders, for years the largest western-based artificial insemination company. He was a strong leader and active in all matters concerning the dairy industry.
In 1932 Jessup’s political influence as a staunch Republican led to his election to the Board of Supervisors.
Jessup was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Rotary, Boy Scouts, Elk and Athletic Clubs; Verdugo Hills Council, and the National Dairy Shrine Organization.
He later moved to Pacoima, where the Roger Jessup Park was named in his honor.
On Jan. 20, 1971, Jessup died. He was 81.
