Info | WHITLEY, James Lucius, a Representative from New York; born in Rochester, N.Y., May 24, 1872; attended the public schools; was graduated from the Rochester Free Academy and from the law department of Union University, Albany, N.Y., in 1898; during the Spanish-American War served as a sergeant in the Seventh Battery, United States Volunteers; was admitted to the bar in 1899 and commenced practice in Rochester, N.Y.; served as assistant corporation counsel, city of Rochester, in 1900 and 1901; chief examiner of the Civil Service Commission 1902-1904; member of the State assembly 1905-1910; served in the State senate 1918-1928; delegate to the Republican State conventions for twenty years; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-first, Seventy-second, and Seventy-third Congresses (March 4, 1929-January 3, 1935); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934 to the Seventy-fourth Congress; returned to the practice of law; died in Rochester, N.Y., May 17, 1959; interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
