Info | Taking the life lessons learned from growing up as the son of dairy farmers, teachers and community leaders, Maurice Sweeney has spent the better part of 30 years as a community business leader, farmer and advocate of the disadvantaged and disenfranchised.
Mr. Sweeney, a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in Sociology and Political Science, has dedicated his life to the service of Kentuckians by serving on more than 30 state, regional and local boards and commissions. Maurice led the negotiations for the desegregation of the Jefferson County Public Schools. He spent 14 years working in State Government including an eight-year stint with the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights from 1977 – 1985, and five years of service with the Kentucky Department of Transportation Cabinet from 1992 – 1996.
While serving under the Jones administration, Mr. Sweeney created and implemented the Kentucky State Government and Trainee Program, to help Kentucky State government management become more diverse. Mr. Sweeney has also experienced success in the private sector as an officer with National City Bank (1985-1992) and presently is President of United Construction & Design Group, Inc., a land surveying and DBE consulting company.
Mr. Sweeney attributes much of his work-ethic and his ability to multitask to his experiences growing up on his beloved 324 acre family farm in Eastwood, Kentucky. He is the son of Dr. P.O. Sweeney of Casey County, Kentucky who was a graduate of Louisville Municipal College and Meharry Medical College. Dr. Sweeney was a Pullman’s porter, a teacher, principal, and a nationally known dentist and gentleman farmer raising dairy, beef, and Thoroughbred horses. He was a past President of the NAACP, the Louisville Urban League, and a Chairman of Mammoth Life Insurance Company. He died in 1960.
His mother, Susa Sweeney of Trigg County, a graduate of Kentucky State University and an educator, taught home economics in Christian and Madison Counties in Kentucky, raised four children and countless neighborhood children teaching them the importance of faith, family and farm.
As he gained more responsibility on the farm, he learned the core values of character, care for the planet, being his brother’s keeper, and of course, frugalness. He is a pro-family, pro-business, common sense candidate to represent the Commonwealth.
Mr. Sweeney hopes his campaign for U.S. Senate inspires others across the state and our great nation to challenge incumbents whose leadership has become outdated, insensitive or ineffective.
