Info | Since the day he arrived at City Hall, at-large City Council Member Michael Berry has distinguished himself as an energetic, inclusive, hands-on leader with a positive vision for the future and a passion for improving the basic city services affecting all Houstonians. He has not only established a clear record for cutting wasteful city spending and offering tax relief - he has also demonstrated a ready willingness to tackle tough issues and challenge insider deals that divide our people and undermine our trust in government.
To help fix the city's $60 million budget deficit, for example, Council Member Berry has led by example by waiving his City Council salary and outlining $60 million in cuts to non-essential city services. He has also consistently sought to provide badly needed tax relief - introducing three tax cuts in the last year - while fighting costly foreign travel by city employees and unfair drainage, trash, and water fee increases. Finally, to strengthen our city's image and to attract new tourism, Berry successfully lured the Stellar Awards for Gospel Music to Houston from Atlanta and has strongly supported the Veteran's Museum of Texas project to honor our nation's veterans.
Michael Berry brings a unique blend of real-world experience and academic accomplishment to his duties at City Hall. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston Honors Program, and earned law degrees from the University of Texas and the University of Nottingham in England. In 1997, he left the practice of law at the firm of Jenkens & Gilchrist to launch his own real estate company, Michael Berry Properties - which today is one of Houston's countless small business success stories. Berry's real-world experience growing his own business has provided many valuable insights, including the impact of skyrocketing property taxes on Houston's families.
Michael Berry and his wife, Nandita, have been married 10 years, and they attend Second Baptist Church.
