| Info | Kim Bracey, a Democrat for more than 20 years, served as the Director of the Department of Community Development for the City of York until January 2009. Appointed by Mayor John S. Brenner in 2003, this department is one of the largest in City government with approximately 50 employees. In this position, Kim was responsible for leading the Bureau of Permits, Planning & Zoning, Public Health and Housing Services.
Prior to her appointment, Kim served as the Executive Director of the South George Street Community Partnership and the Weed & Seed AID Coordinator for the City of York. She was charged with revitalizing a 60-block area of southeast York City. The organization was instrumental in galvanizing neighborhood residents to take a more active role in their community while working with other stakeholders to change the appearance of the area.
Born on January 5, 1964, Kim and her three younger siblings grew up in York where she attended York City schools and is a proud graduate of William Penn Senior High School. There, she began her career in community service and giving back. She also participated in the Marching Band, Track & Field, and student government. She was a "candy-striper" at the York Hospital, a youth leader in her church, and involved with assisting the elderly. Kim attended Bloomsburg University and in 1984 joined the United States Air Force where she served honorably until 1994.
While in college, Kim served as the President of the Black Student Caucus and was engaged in advocacy and student rights, particularly for students of color, with both state and federal legislators. While serving in the Air Force, Kim was involved in numerous community service activities and organizations who shared a common mission of supporting women and children. She served as a rape crisis intervention counselor, an advocate for HIV/AIDS education and awareness, a "soccer mom", and a Big Sister volunteer. Kim chose to return home to York in 1994 to work for the Crispus Attucks Association, where she managed the YouthBuild AmeriCorps program, which was designed to assist young people to obtain a high school education and to learn a trade.
Continuing the spirit of community activism, Kim currently serves or has served on the Boards of York Hospital, the Martin Library, and the York County Community Foundation, namely because of their organization's missions and their commitment to serving the York community. She also was the founding President of the York Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, a 30 year old national organization whose mission is to develop leaders to rebuild their communities and redirect the energies of younger Black people who live in those communities. She is an active member of the Friendship Baptist Church and serves as the church's Treasurer.
