InfoFormer UTM rodeo cowboy Mat McClain, 39, has announced his candidacy in the August 1st Republican primary for the U.S. House of Representatives. A political newcomer, McClain describes himself as a conservative.

McClain competed in rodeos for eighteen years and received numerous awards. He earned his full membership in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1984 and competed in the Great Lakes Circuit Finals three times. He competed in the International Finals Rodeo three times, and was named "Rookie of the Year" by the International Professional Rode Association. He qualified two seasons and competed for UT Martin in the College National Final Rodeo (CNFR). He earned the title 1991 Ozark Region Champion bareback bronc rider and all-around cowboy. He finished twice in the top ten in the nation bareback riders at the CNFR.

McClain served this country as a U.S. Army paratrooper. He served at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky in the Long Range Surveillance Detachment where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. McClain strongly feels that America's sovereignty is influenced by its military strength.

McClain graduated in 1994 from UT Martin with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Concentration of Arts and Science in Environmental Studies. When questioned about his college experience McClain states "My primary reason for finishing college was my desire to learn how to think. My study of philosophy certainly aided me in that goal. A non-relativistic study of Socratic dualism will always lead you to the Son of God and the logos."

He married his wife Bobbie in 1993. They have three children Jessica Farmer 21, Caleb Farmer 17, and Hanna Michele McClain. They live in Greenfield where McClain volunteers to install for the Weakley County Habitat for Humanity. He has also worked in Habitat houses in Martin, Dresden, and Gleason. He enjoys the volunteer work because it helps people secure home ownership who might otherwise find it hard to obtain. "The beautiful thing about Habitat for Humanity is that it is a perfect example of what free people can do for each other without federal involvement," says McClain. He goes on to say that "Habitat for Humanity serves to help keep the wealth in the private sector where it belongs."

McClain contends that his candidacy is predicated on the idea that he is an ordinary person who loves God and Country. "The fate of our great nation depends on electing people who stand for keeping the power out of Washington and in the hands of the represented." McClain and his family worship the Lord at First Baptist Church in Greenfield.

McClain says that "if I am elected to the U.S. House of Representatives I will diligently support the development and maintenance of a strong and sovereign United States military. I will consider supporting any legislation that does not increase the scope, reach, or power of the Federal Government. I will support any legislation that is clearly Constitutional. I want the people of the 8th Congressional District to know that I will fight diligently for the civil rights that are laid forth in the Declaration of Independence."
