Michael McGinn is the proven candidate we need, the person who can re-set priorities at City Hall and make Seattle’s best ideas a reality. As a dedicated citizen, he’s already made our city better. Now let’s make him our mayor.

Michael is a husband, a father, a neighbor, a lawyer, and a community organizer who has worked to make our city a better place. A former partner at Seattle law firm Stokes Lawrence, Michael has also worked with government agencies and elected officials to improve people’s lives. Still, he has never been afraid to be on the outside and challenge City Hall, joining his fellow citizens to fight for a better future.

A Proven Leader
Over the past decade Michael has served on some of the city and state’s most important advisory groups, commissions, and campaigns — chosen by mayors and other elected leaders to help solve Seattle’s most urgent needs: reliable transit, more parks, better streets, more housing, saving Puget Sound, fighting global warming.

But Michael doesn’t just talk about the problems we face; he is a leader who organizes citizens and fights for real change. He most recently co-founded and was executive director of Great City, a nonprofit organization that brings together neighbors, environmentalists, and business leaders. Under his leadership, Great City coordinated the Green Legacy Coalition, which urged the City Council to make new investments in our parks and green spaces.

In 2008, Michael served as co-chair of the Seattle Parks For All campaign, the citizen-powered movement that passed at the polls despite heavy opposition from the Nickels machine.

Someone Who Fights for What We Need
Michael’s roots are in the neighborhoods, but he understands how government works.

Before law school, he was a legislative aide to Oregon Democratic Congressman Jim Weaver. He then served as President of the University of Washington’s Graduate and Professional Student Senate, where he led campaigns to provide better housing and health benefits for students.

As president of the Greenwood Community Council, Michael helped lead the fight to bring much-needed sidewalks to his neighborhood.

Michael also chaired the local chapter of the Sierra Club, overseeing the Club’s work on state and local issues, and serving on the Club’s national political committee. In 2007 he led a citizens’ campaign to stop a measure, championed by the mayor, which would have burdened Seattle with unprecedented taxes to fund 180 miles of suburban highways around Seattle. The next year, he worked to help pass the Sound Transit measure to expand light rail.

Most recently, Michael was chosen by the Sierra Club President to serve on the nominating committee for the Sierra Club National Board.

A Citizen Who Understands Seattle
Michael lives in Greenwood with his wife Peggy and their children Jack, Miyo, and Cian (and dog Midge). As one of six children, he was raised by educators: his mother was a school principal, his father the director of community services for their school district.

During his free time, Michael loves coaching his sons and daughter in youth sports and tending to his garden. When he commutes to work, he often rides his bike.
