InfoI was born and raised in McPherson County, on the very same family farm that we still own today. My father worked the land after coming back from the Pacific Theatre in World War II, and held a second job when times were tough so that he could provide for the family. My mother spent every day of the year helping my father run the farm. She also made sure that we did our chores, and she even found time to help us with our schoolwork.

I learned the value of honesty, integrity, and the importance of a hard day’s work growing up on the family farm. My parents taught me that no task or chore was above me, and they helped me understand the value of common sense in problem solving for every facet of life. I will be forever grateful to my parents who, above all, taught me about life in rural Kansas, and the importance of traditional Kansas values.

Beginning in Roxbury, I’ve attended Kansas schools all my life. The school in Roxbury underwent consolidation when I was a junior in high school, and I can still vividly remember that process. Seeing the consolidation firsthand helped me to understand the difficulties facing education in rural Kansas from an early age.

I graduated from Canton high school and chose to stay in the region. I wanted to be close to my family, so I decided to attended McPherson college, where I earned a degree in education, found a career, and met my husband.

Straight out of college I made the decision to devote my life to public service by entering the teaching profession in 1971. I’ve taught at the middle school, high school, and the university levels, all in public schools. During my 38 years in teaching I’ve coached 5 different civics teams to the We the People competition in Washington D.C, and now serve as the state coordinator of the program. I helped set up mock elections for the students in every election cycle, I’ve developed state assessments for social studies, and I received a Master’s degree in political science from Fort Hays State University. Along the way I had four children, and we recently welcomed two grandchildren.

As a teacher I’ve received many of teaching’s highest honors in the state, including being twice recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution as the Kansas History Teacher of the Year, and the 2001 District 1 Secondary Kansas Teacher of the Year. I’ve also received National Board Certification, the highest achievement of the teaching profession, and I was recently recognized by McPherson College as a Dayton Rothrock Alumni Fellow.

Above all, I’ve devoted my life to Kansas, serving many roles. I’ve been a life-long educator, a parent, a grandparent, a Realtor, a small business owner, a precinct committeewoman, a planning commission member, a farmer, and as always, a Kansan.

I’ve entered the race for Kansas’ Big First Congressional District to carry on the tradition of responsible leadership and fiscal conservatism that will help our district be a prosperous place to live for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.
