InfoHIESTAND, John Andrew, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pa., October 2, 1824; attended the common schools, an academy in Marietta, Pa., and Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in Lancaster, Pa.; elected as a Whig to the State house of representatives in 1852, 1853, and 1856; purchased an interest in the Lancaster Examiner in 1858 and relinquished the practice of law; served in the State senate in 1860; unsuccessful candidate in 1868 to Congress to fill the unexpired term of Thaddeus Stevens; appointed by President Grant in 1871 naval officer at the port of Philadelphia; reappointed in 1875 and served until 1879; elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1889); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1888 to the Fifty-first Congress; died in Lancaster, Pa., December 13, 1890; interment in Marietta Cemetery, Marietta, Pa.
