InfoGjorge Ivanov (Macedonian: Ѓорге Иванов, sometimes transliterated as Gjorgje Ivanov (Ѓорѓе Иванов) or Georgi Ivanov (Георги Иванов)[1] [2] (born 2 May 1960 in Valandovo) is a Macedonian professor of law and presidential candidate of the conservative party VMRO-DPMNE for the Macedonian presidential election in 2009, which will take place on 22 March 2009.[3] Although he was proposed as a candidate by the governing party VMRO-DPMNE, he is not a member of the party.[4] According to a poll from February 2009, Ivanov is the leading presidential candidate with the support of 27% of the consulted persons, the second candidate having the support of only 13%.[5] He finished primary and secondary school in his hometown Valandovo. Until 1990 he was an activist in the League of Socialist Youth of Yugoslavia. His permanent residence is in the Macedonian capital Skopje. He is married and has two children.[6]

Mr Ivanov had a commentary on the US Department of State report on the status of the democracy in Republic of Macedonia. In a statement given on February 28, 2009 Ivanov said that 'Macedonian democracy resembles a 'Cosmodisk'. Somebody may not like it, but it functions', pointing to the US critical stance towards the status of the democracy in the Republic of Macedonia. [7]
