Sir Jeremy Beecham

Sir Jeremy was first elected to Benwell Ward, Newcastle City Council, in 1967, and was Leader of Newcastle from 1977 to 1994. In 1991 he was elected Chairman of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities, until the organisation was merged with the Association of District Councils and the Association of County Councils to form the LGA on 1 April 1997. He was elected Chairman of the Local Government Association in its shadow form in 1995, and has been re-elected since. He has been Leader of the Labour Group since 1997.

Sir Jeremy has been President of the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) since 1995 and served as a member of the President of the Board of Trade's Working Party on Competitiveness. He was a member of the Cabinet Sub Committee on Modernising Local Government. He has been a member of the Labour Party National Executive Committee since 1998, and is Chairman for 2005/06.

He is Honorary President of Newcastle Age Concern, Newcastle Choral Society and Tyneside People-to-People Week, and Vice President of the Newcastle Council of Voluntary Service and of the Tyne and Wear Community Foundation. He is a Director of the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and a Trustee of the Tyneside Film Theatre. He has served as a member of the President's Committee of Business in the Community and is a council member of Common Purpose.

His special interests include local and regional government and social policy. He enjoys reading, music and the Arts.
