InfoWHEREAS, recorded with a sense of deep sorrow and loss is the death of Mr. John Guthrie on March 17, 2005, at the age of 78 years; and

WHEREAS, born in Birmingham, John Guthrie was the son of an Italian immigrant whose birth name was Marco Ferlisi; after his parents divorced, he lived with his mother and her parents in Baileyton Community in Cullman County; his grandparents adopted him and named him John Guthrie; and

WHEREAS, a farmer-businessman, John Guthrie worked with the cotton, trucking, and the oil business; he served one term in the Alabama House of Representatives and often met with his constituents on his front porch; he is best known for sponsoring a post-1960 census "chop-up" bill to make Jefferson County part of four congressional districts; and

WHEREAS, even after an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor in 1962, John Guthrie remained politically involved, managing his son-in-law, Jim Folsom, Jr.'s bid for the United States Senate in 1980 and lobbying for the Alabama Farmers Federation; and

WHEREAS, left to cherish the memory of John Guthrie are his wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen Guthrie; sons, David Guthrie and John Guthrie, Jr.; daughter, Marsha Guthrie Folsom; and seven grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, a big supporter of young people entering the political arena, John Guthrie lived his philosophy, "do not worry about what lies ahead or what lies behind you, but focus on what lies within you"; and
