Mitch Irwin, Director of the state Department of Management & Budget, brings a rich mix of public and private sector experience to the position. He is a former state Senator, having served 12 years in that post. He is also a veteran businessperson and early in his career was an economic development official in his native Upper Peninsula.
Irwin was an entrepreneur for 12 years prior to his appointment. His company, the Irwin Group, was a real estate development, investment and consulting business. He was also the founder and member manager of several Michigan limited liability corporations, primarily in the hospitality industry as a franchisee of Marriott International and Country Suites Hotels.
As a legislator, Irwin represented the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan as a state Senator. During his term, he held important committee assignments including Appropriations, Trade and Tourism, Health and Social Services and Transportation. In 1987, he traveled to the Peoples Republic of China as part of the state's leadership delegation exploring economic development opportunities there.
He authored important pieces of legislation including the Great Lakes Conservation Act, Older Michiganians Act and the Community Convention and Tourist Act. He also co-authored the Michigan Education Trust and founded the Michigan Senior Intern Program.
Prior to his Senate service, Irwin was a planner with the Eastern U.P. Regional Planning and Development Commission and the Economic Development Corporation of Chippewa County.
Irwin was graduated cum laude by Lake Superior State University in 1974 in Sault Ste. Marie. He is a 1970 graduate of Rudyard, Michigan, High School.
His wife, Cindy, is an attorney. They have two sons, Jeffrey, 25, and Andrew, 12. Jeffrey works for the League of Conservation Voters and serves as a Washtenaw County Commissioner. Andrew is a student in the East Lansing school system.
