Info | Wendy has been a Liberal Democrat Councillor on Newcastle City Council since 1988. Since the Liberal Democrats took control of the Council in 2004, Wendy has been Executive Member for Environment, Sustainability & Transport & has led the Council on issues such as tackling Climate Change, waste management, improving public transport, encouraging cycling & reducing fuel poverty. This work has led to recycling & home composting increasing from 8% under Labour to 47%, over 30,000 homes being given insulation measures to reduce fuel poverty through Newcastle Warm Zone, the installation of biomass boilers in new schools & high-rise flats, a Car Club being established in the City, electric vehicle charging points being installed across Newcastle, massive investment in road & pavement renewal, the introduction of 20mph speed limits on all residential streets & a sustainable energy action plan. In 2009 Newcastle was named as the most sustainable city in the UK by Forum for the Future. Wend y recently launched the Newcastle Declaration on Climate Change with ambitious, but achievable targets for the Council & its partners.
Wendy is also a Consultant in Clinical Oncology at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, treating patients with breast & gynaecological cancer. She believes passionately in the NHS & in protecting front line services & medical research, whilst getting rid of the waste caused by excessive concentration on targets & increased bureaucracy.
Wendy has lived in Newcastle East for 30 years & is a Governor of two local schools. She is married with two children who are both students. She is strongly opposed to student tuition fees, believing that it is wrong for young people to have to start their working lives heavily in debt. She is also a member of Amnesty International & the No 2ID campaign.
