Jeff Sessions was born in Hybart, Alabama, on December 24, 1946, the son of a country store owner. He attended school in nearby Camden. He became an Eagle Scout in 1964 and recently received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Huntingdon College in 1969 and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Alabama in 1973. Sessions first practiced law in Russellville, Alabama, and then in Mobile, which he now calls home. Jeff Sessions served as an officer in the United States Army Reserves from 1973 until 1986, reaching the rank of Captain. Currently, he is a member of the Huntingdon College Board of Trustees as well as the Samford University Board of Overseers.

Jeff Sessions has served as lay leader and as a Sunday school teacher at his family's church, Ashland Place United Methodist Church, in Mobile. In 1983, he served as the Chairman of his church's Administrative Board. Every year since 1987, Sessions has been selected as a delegate to the annual Alabama Methodist Conference.

Sessions has served as Alabama's Attorney General (1995-1997), as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama (1981-1993), and as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama (1975-1977). Senator Sessions began serving in the U.S. Senate in January of 1997.
