Info | Mayor Johnny L. DuPree has been a resident of Hattiesburg since childhood and has always taken pride in his community. His civic involvement began in 1987 when he was appointed to the Hattiesburg School Board and served until 1992.
Before being elected mayor, he was elected three times to the Forrest County Board of Supervisors, District Four, serving from 1992 to 2001.
In July 2001, DuPree, a Democrat, became the first African American mayor for the City of Hattiesburg, unseating a three-term incumbent.
Mayor DuPree’s vision for the City of Hattiesburg includes participation from all areas of the city. He believes the most effective city government is one with an active citizenry. He is working to redevelop neighborhoods within the city and improve infrastructure.
One of his missions as mayor is to improve the housing conditions for the people of Hattiesburg, and he is working diligently to institute programs to address that most basic need of citizens.
During his time as mayor, Hattiesburg has also received state and national recognition for two programs begun under his administration, the Early Warning Weather Alert Program, which places weather radios into the homes of low-income, elderly and disabled citizens, and the Mayor’s Financial Education Initiative, whose partners provide free tax preparations and financial education to people in the Hattiesburg area.
Also, the Council of Neighborhoods, one of DuPree’s visions when running for mayor, was begun almost immediately upon his taking office in July 2001. This Council was recognized with a 2nd place national award for Cultural Diversity from the National League of Cities. The Council, made up of representatives of the City’s nearly 40 organized neighborhood associations meets quarterly to not only learn about new things the City has planned but also to offer input from the neighborhoods that each can learn from.
In addition to his civic contributions, DuPree holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science from the University of Southern Mississippi and is a former member of the USM Foundation, the USM Partners for the Arts, the USM Honor Club, Gamma Beta Phi Society and the USM Alumni Association. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in urban studies from Jackson State University.
Since taking office as mayor because of his outstanding civic work and commitment to bettering his community, DuPree was appointed to serve on the Federal Election Reform Act Commission for Mississippi by Secretary of State Eric Clark. He was also appointed to the Tri State Southern Rapid Rail Transit Commission by former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove.
In addition DuPree’s wife, Johniece, heads the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, which serves as a liaison group to the mayor on youth-related issues.
DuPree is a life member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where he serves on the Deacon Board. He and his wife, Johniece, have been married for 32 years and have two daughters, April and Monica.
