InfoBorn February 3, 1943 in Laredo -- the once-remote outpost founded by Sanchez' ancestors in 1755 -- Tony Sanchez was born to a former office supply salesman, Antonio Rodolfo Sanchez, Sr. and his wife Alicia M. Sanchez. As a young man, Tony showed an entrepreneurial spirit when he packed pineapples and melons in local produce houses after school, sold coffee and breakfast from the back of a truck outside local factory gates, and helped in his father's small typewriter repair shop. From these humble beginnings, Tony rose to become the first in his family to attend college. With the help of student loans and a series of part-time jobs, he earned business administration (1965) and law degrees (1969) from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. After graduation, Tony took a position as an aide to the Texas lieutenant governor, while continuing the weekly pilgrimage to Laredo to help his father in their fledgling oil and gas brokerage business. In 1972, Tony married Maria Josefina (Tani) Guajardo, a former schoolteacher. Together they have four children: Tony III, Ana Lee, Eduardo and Patricio. Today, Tony is a leading figure in an array of industries, from oil and gas to banking and technology. During the period from 1981-2000, Sanchez' family business holdings and activities created over 75,000 permanent, full-time jobs in Texas, making him a leader in statewide economic development. In October 2000, Tony was honored for his lifetime work and achievement with induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame.
