InfoMark Fernald was born in Keene, raised in Peterborough, and now lives in Sharon with his wife, Beth, and their two children. He attended Peterborough public schools, graduating from ConVal High School in 1977. Mark is a magna cum laude graduate of Amherst College and a cum laude graduate of Boston College Law School. After law school, Mark worked in the real estate department of the Boston law firm of Goodwin, Procter & Hoar before deciding to return to his roots in New Hampshire. For the past thirteen years, Mark has worked as a country lawyer in Peterborough.

Community
An active member of the Peterborough community, Mark was president of the Monadnock Community Day Care Center for three years, and served as a director for an additional three years. He was a director of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce from 1996 to 1998. He served as a director and secretary of the non-profit Colonial Theatre in Keene in 1997 and 1998. He has also done fundraising work for the Monadnock United Way. He is a charter member and past president of the Peterborough Kiwanis Club. He has also served on the Church Council at Union Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Peterborough

Politics
In 1998, Mark entered politics by challenging Republican incumbent David Wheeler for the Senate District 11 seat. The centerpiece of Mark’s campaign was comprehensive tax reform and property tax relief through the enactment of an education income tax and statewide property tax with homestead exemption. Despite predictions that he would lose in a landslide, Mark was elected with over 55% of the vote, sweeping even Mr. Wheeler’s home town of Milford. He is the first Democrat elected to the District 11 seat since before the Civil War.

Senate
In the New Hampshire Senate, Mark serves on the Banks, Judiciary, and Enrolled Bills Committees. He is also a member of the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium Commission.

Personal Interests
Mark is an avid gardener and tennis player. He is also an accomplished singer, with many choral and solo performances to his credit. He has appeared in several productions of the Raylynmor Opera Company in Keene and Peterborough, most notably as Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors.
