Info | WILLIAMS, Morgan B., a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Rhandir-Mwyn, parish of Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn, Carmarthenshire, Wales, September 17, 1831; attended the public schools; went to Australia in 1856; returned to Wales in August 1861; immigrated to the United States in March 1862 and settled in Scranton, Pa., where he worked in the coal mines; moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in September 1865; appointed superintendent for the Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co., which position he held for fourteen years; member of the school board and of the city council for twelve years; served in the State senate in 1884; member of the Chicago World’s Fair Commission; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1897-March 3, 1899); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1898 to the Fifty-sixth Congress; engaged in coal mining, and was vice president and general manager of the Red Ash Coal Co.; died in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., October 13, 1903; interment in Hollenback Cemetery.
