| Info | The people of Illinois work hard, raise their families and build great communities. For far too long, they have been ill-served by their elected representatives. The criminality surrounding our past two governors is well-documented and certainly an embarrassment, but perhaps more troubling is the constant stagnation in Springfield. While Illinois’ elected leaders are busy fighting with each other and engaging in petty partisan bickering, the rest of us are left with a state that simply doesn’t function. Illinois is in an economic and ethical ditch.
The situation in Springfield cries out for new leadership – for someone with the experience to get things done but without the baggage of career politicians. Justin Oberman is running for Lieutenant Governor because we need fresh leadership in Springfield, leadership dedicated to helping create a government that puts the public interest first.
Justin has more than 12 years of experience in industries that are at the forefront of the new economy - green technologies, aviation, transportation, and homeland security. He has served in senior executive roles in the U.S. Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security. His career and life are marked by public service, honesty and a commitment to tackling tough problems with innovative solutions, and getting results.
A Commitment to Public Service
Justin comes from a tradition of public service and civic engagement. His father Marty was born and raised in Springfield and served as a progressive, reform-minded Alderman in Chicago. In the City Council, Marty battled the entrenched interests in City Hall on behalf of families across the city whose government was closed. His mother helps run an organization dedicated to teaching children around the world about the dangers of bigotry and hatred and arming them with the tools to stand up to these evils.
Justin demonstrated his commitment to public service following the tragic events of 9/11. Already working for the federal government under Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta – the only Democrat in the Bush Cabinet – Justin was asked to help stand up a new agency. In a room with two other people, Justin helped found the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
As a progressive Democrat working for the Bush Administration, Justin faced challenges, but he never lost sight of the goal of keeping Americans safe. As the transportation security needs of the nation grew, so too did Justin’s responsibilities. By the age of 30, he was a senior executive directing an office of more than 125 employees and 400 contractors with an annual budget of $150 million. In this role, Justin reported directly to the head of TSA and ran more than a dozen programs designed to identify potential terrorist threats.
In his capacity as a high-ranking Homeland Security official, Justin’s responsibilities included daily interaction with TSA and DHS leadership, as well as with policy makers in Congress, the White House, state and local governments, industry groups, labor unions, privacy advocates, and the news media. At the request of the Secretary of Homeland Security, Justin co-chaired a working group on DHS reform.
Time and again in his government career, Justin took on and successfully executed difficult assignments that Cabinet secretaries, agency heads, and other senior executives gave him without ever compromising his loyalty or integrity. These are traits that will serve the governor and the people of Illinois well as Lt. Governor.
As one of only a handful of Democrats with post-9/11 executive security experience, Justin had the privilege to serve as a member of the homeland security policy advisory committee for President Obama’s campaign.
Relevant Private Sector Experience
When Justin returned to Chicago and to the private sector in 2006, he continued his work in aviation, transportation and security, and expanded his focus to include clean-tech companies. In 2007, Justin co-founded NEXA Capital Partners, supporting capital-raising efforts for numerous clients in these sectors. Firms like NEXA are critical to the rebuilding of our nation’s economy and to the creation of new jobs. Their support of small companies in emerging industries is instrumental to helping our nation – and our state – rebound.
Justin’s clients at NEXA include a provider of fractional shares in light jets, the world’s first “green” airline, a developer of unmanned wind-powered naval vessels, and the creator of a specialized lock for shipping containers.
Prior to working for the federal government, Justin worked at Arthur Andersen from 1996 to 2000, where he helped establish the aviation practice, becoming one of the youngest managers at the firm. Justin served clients in the U.S., Europe, former Soviet Union, and Southeast Asia.
