InfoSue Kelly, currently in her fifth term as U.S. Congresswoman from the 19th District of New York, was first sworn into office on January 4, 1995. Her career is a model of community and national service.

Earned Masters degree in Health Advocacy from Sarah Lawrence College

Active member of her church
Since her election to Congress, Sue Kellys accomplishments have been significant and diverse. Sue pushed legislation through Congress providing $11 million for habitat restoration along the Hudson River; her legislation to guarantee woman reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy become law in 1998; and she championed legislation, which is now law, relieving most homeowners of capital gains taxation when they sell their principal residence.

Sue spearheaded the effort to bring home $27 million for a new veterans nursing home in Montrose, N.Y. and successfully secured $35 million in important transportation infrastructure projects in the Hudson Valley. She continues to work in support of numerous federal grant programs which help Hudson Valley communities address issues ranging from local law enforcement needs to clean water projects for municipalities.

In the 108th Congress, Sue continues to represent the interests of Hudson Valley residents on issues such as homeland security, Social Security to education and health care. She has worked closely with President Bush in improving homeland security, and is working to make sure the Social Security system will be there for future generations of Americans by placing the Social Security surplus in a lock-box, protecting it from more government spending.

As a former teacher, Sue believes that decisions about out childrens education are best made at the local level. Thats why she is committed to giving teachers in the classroom and local administrations the flexibility to decide how best to use federal resources in meeting the education needs of students.

Sue is once again fighting for health care reforms to ensure that health care decisions are made by patients and their doctors, not insurance company bureaucrats. She has reintroduced the Womans Health and Cancer Rights Act to protect woman with breast cancer, as well as the Treatment of Childrens Deformities Act, legislation to ensure insurance coverage for children in need of reconstructive surgery because of congenital defects such as cleft palates.

Sue remains committed to simplifying the tax code so Hudson Valley taxpayers can keep more of their hard-earned dollars. She continues to address issues of concern to small business owners and seek innovative ways to create well-paying, secure jobs for Hudson Valley residents.

The 19th Congressional district includes all of Putnam and parts of Orange, Dutchess, Rockland and Westchester counties. The district is home to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Sue and her husband, Edward, live in Katonah, N.Y. She is a mother of four and has six grandchildren.
