He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Temple University.
A former prosecutor in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, McCaffery works for the politically connected Elkins Park law firm of Jaffe, Friedman, Schuman, Sciolla, Nemeroff and Applebaum.

McCaffery serves as legal counsel to several labor organizations and the Democratic City Committee, whose boss is U.S. Rep. Bob Brady (D-1st dist.).
He is a United States Army veteran who served in the First Calvary Division. Brother of state Supreme Court Justice Seamus McCaffery. Briefly a candidate for the 13th Congressional District in 2004.
