| Info | Congressman Michael R. McNulty is in his 34th year in elective public office. His record includes extensive service at the local, state and national levels.
First elected to public office in November 1969 as Town Supervisor of Green Island, Michael McNulty became the youngest Town Supervisor in New York State at the age of 22. After serving eight years as Supervisor, he was elected Mayor of the Village of Green Island and served in that capacity until he was elected to represent New York's 106th Assembly District in 1982.
During his tenure in the New York State Legislature, he served as Chairman of the Assembly's Democratic Study Group and chaired the Subcommittees on Alcoholism in Corrections, and Transportation Capital Improvements. He was a member of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources and the Administrative Regulations Review Commission (ARRC), and served on the 13-member New York State Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.
Mike was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 23rd Congressional District of New York in 1988, and was re-elected in 1990. In 1992, he was elected to represent the new 21st Congressional District, and was re-elected in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000.
McNulty was re-elected to his eighth term in the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2002 with more than 75% of the vote. The newly-drawn 21st Congressional District includes all of Albany, Montgomery, Schenectady and Schoharie Counties, and portions of Fulton, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties.
After having served as Freshman Majority Whip for the Northern Region of the country during the first session of the 101st Congress, McNulty was named to the position of Majority Whip-at-Large, and served in that capacity through the 103rd Congress. He now serves as At-Large Whip.
Congressman McNulty has served on the Armed Services Committee, the Small Business Committee, the International Relations Committee, and the Committee on Post Office and Civil Service. From 1989 until its dissolution in 1993, he served on the Select Committee on Hunger. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus.
In 2003, McNulty will complete his tenth year of service on the powerful House Ways & Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over taxation, international trade, health care, human resources and Social Security. He is the Ranking Democratic Member of the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, which deals with various tax proposals. He also serves on the Subcommittee on Oversight.
Congressman McNulty has traveled widely in foreign countries, including Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Haiti, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sudan, Taiwan, Tunisia, and Vietnam. He has also traveled to both the North Pole and the South Pole with members of the 109th Air Wing, Stratton Air National Guard, which is based in Glenville.
McNulty became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America on July 15, 1960, at the age of twelve.
He is a graduate of St. Joseph's Institute, Barrytown, N.Y.; Loyola University Rome Center, Rome, Italy; and the College of Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. He is also a graduate of the Hill School of Insurance in New York City.
In 1991, he was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) by the College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York. In 1993, he was awarded a Doctorate of Laws (Honoris Causa) by Siena College, Loudonville, New York. In 1995, he was awarded a Doctorate of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. In 1998, he received the Community Leadership Award from The Board of Trustees of the Sage Colleges, Troy, New York. In 2000, he was awarded a Doctorate of Laws (Honoris Causa) by Excelsior College, Albany, New York.
Mike is married to the former Nancy Ann Lazzaro. They have four daughters: Michele, Angela, Nancy, and Maria, four granddaughters, Teigin Michele, Alicia Michelle, Lola Madelon, and Morgyn Jean, and a grandson, Elijah Michael.
