Info | HOGE, Solomon Lafayette, a Representative from South Carolina; born in Pickreltown, Logan County, Ohio, July 11, 1836; attended Bellefontaine (Ohio) public schools and Northwood College, Northwood, Ohio (now Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa.); received a classical education and was graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1859; was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced practice in Bellefontaine, Ohio; entered the Union Army in 1861 as first lieutenant in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was subsequently promoted to the rank of captain; moved to Columbia, S.C. in 1868; associate justice of the State supreme court 1868-1870; successfully contested as a Republican the election of J.P. Reed to the Forty-first Congress and served from April 8, 1869, to March 3, 1871; comptroller general of South Carolina in 1874 and 1875; elected to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); was not a candidate for renomination in 1876; moved to Kenton, Ohio, in September 1877 and practiced law until 1882; president of the First National Bank of Kenton; died in Battle Creek, Mich., February 23, 1909; interment in Grove Cemetery, Kenton, Ohio.
