InfoBRAWLEY, William Huggins, (cousin of John James Hemphill and great-uncle of Robert Witherspoon Hemphill), a Representative from South Carolina; born in Chester, Chester County, S.C., May 13, 1841; attended the common schools, and was graduated from South Carolina College at Columbia in 1860; enlisted as a private in Company F, Sixth Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Confederate States Army, April 11, 1861; lost an arm in the Battle of Seven Pines and was retired from service; traveled and studied in Europe in 1864 and 1865; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice at Chester, S.C.; elected solicitor of the sixth judicial circuit of South Carolina in 1868 and served until his resignation in 1874; moved to Charleston and continued the practice of his profession; member of the State house of representatives 1882-1890; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses and served from March 4, 1891, until February 12, 1894, when he resigned to accept a position on the bench; appointed January 18, 1894, United States district judge of the district of South Carolina and served from February 12, 1894, until his resignation June 14, 1911; lived in retirement until his death in Charleston, S.C., November 15, 1916; interment in Magnolia Cemetery.
