| Info | Linda Pence has spent her career taking tough, principled stands for the people of Indiana—and winning. She’s earned a reputation as a hardworking and tenacious advocate for her clients—someone you always want on your side.
The daughter of a World War II veteran and a civil servant, Linda grew up in Indianapolis with an early passion for politics and the law. She graduated from Indiana University (IU) in 1971 with a B.A. in Political Science. Linda then worked her way through law school at IU, taking night classes while holding down two jobs.
A practicing trial attorney for 34 years, Linda began her legal career in Washington, DC with the U.S. Department of Justice, where she investigated corporations for bribery, embezzlement, and tax fraud. She also was an instructor at the FBI Academy and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
Upon returning to Indianapolis, Linda took on an unusual challenge for a woman at the time—she began her own law firm, which quickly grew into a successful criminal and civil law practice. Linda continued to break through the glass ceiling when in 1995, she became the first woman partner to have her name on the door at one of the city’s 10 largest law firms.
Linda is known statewide for winning a record settlement of over $14 million for the State of Indiana against a Corporation whose illegal practices killed tons of fish in the White River. The winnings have been used to help restore the river and improve our environment.
Shortly after the White River victory, Linda secured another major victory, this time, standing up for mom-and-pop gas station owners against the multinational Shell Oil corporation. Linda has also won special commendations and recognition for leading investigations into mortgage fraud, nursing home practices, and consumer fraud. Throughout her career, Linda has never backed down from a fight. She’s taken on multi–billion dollar corporations to protect Indiana residents, our environment, and our values. As Attorney General, her experience and passion will be critical as she addresses the fight against meth, helps ease the mortgage crisis, and keeps Indiana families safe.
