InfoGERRY, Elbridge - Massachusetts politician and fifth U.S. Vice President; great-grandfather of Peter Goelet Gerry.

Born July 17, 1744 in Marblehead MA. Graduated from Harvard College in 1762.

Engaged in commercial pursuits in his family's firm.

MA Colonial Assembly 1772-1775

Member of the Continental Congress 1776-1780 and 1783-1785; a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention 1787 and declined to sign the final document.

U.S. Representative (AF-MA) 1789-1793

Appointed to visit France during the XYZ Affair by President Adams as part of a three-man team to resolve difficulties between the two nations.

Unsuccessful candidate for various offices on the Democratic Republican ticket, including Governor of Massachusetts

Governor (DR-MA) 1810-1812. During his term, the 1812 redistricting took place. The drawing of districts to elect more DRP members led to the label "gerrymandering" in his honor. Note: although his name is pronounced with a hard "g," the word "gerrymandering" is pronounced with a soft "g" or a "j" sound. Defeated for re-election, 1812

U.S. Vice President (DR) 1813-1814. Gerry was nominated soon after losing the governorship.

Died in office on 11/23/1814; remains interred in the Congressional Cemetery, Washington DC. Both of James Madison's vice presidents died in office (Gerry and George Clinton); they were also the first two to do so. The next VP to die in office was in 1853.
