US Secretary of State 1944-1945; he was the youngest person at that time to hold the position. Appointed by President Roosevelt and took office 12/1/1944, then continued in office under President Truman, and served until 6/27/1945. As Secretary of State, accompanied President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in 1945, and was chairman of the United States delegation to the United Nations Conference at San Francisco the same year.
