InfoUnited States Representative Carolyn McCarthy is in her fourth term representing Long Island's 4th Congressional District. A life-long resident of Mineola, she has over 30 years experience as a nurse. Carolyn married Dennis McCarthy in 1967 and they raised one son, Kevin, 34. Carolyn has two grandchildren, Denis and Grace, by Kevin and his wife Leslie.

Carolyn had led a mostly quiet life as a nurse, mother and housewife until she was thrust into the spotlight on December 7, 1993. On that day, her husband was killed and her son injured when a crazed gunman randomly shot into a rush hour commuter train returning from New York City to Long Island. Rather than allow this tragedy to defeat her, Carolyn turned the incident into a public campaign against gun violence.

Carolyn holds many honors, including Newsday's 100 Long Island Influentials, Long Island Business News' Long Island Top 50, Congressional Quarterly's 50 Most Effective Legislators, Redbook Magazine's Mothers and Shakers, Ladies' Home Journal 100 Most Important Women, and Advertising Age's list of "Most Impact by Women in 1999", and The American Organization of Nurse Executives' 2003 Honorary Member Award.

Committee Work

"...there?s more to McCarthy than limiting the ability of criminals to buy weapons. More and more, she has parlayed her experience as a nurse and mother into a growing expertise - and influence - on health and education issues.

?Newsday Editorial, 5/5/02 "Here?s How LI?s Congressional Delegation is Doin?"

Congresswoman McCarthy serves on the Education and Workforce Committee, and the Financial Services Committee. On these committees, Carolyn advances her goals to provide working families tax cuts, stimulate the economy, encourage investment, protect Long Islanders' savings and pensions, ensure every child a top education, and keep guns out of schools and away from criminals. She also wants to protect Social Security and Medicare for all Long Islanders.

Long Island schools, students and teachers remain the focus of Congresswoman McCarthy's work in Congress. Carolyn was a key figure in the passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which contained her provisions to fund school nurses, after-school care and teacher mentoring programs. This year, she will work on the overhaul of the Higher Education Act, which provides a framework for the federal student loan program.

Congresswoman McCarthy also serves on the Financial Services Committee. The Financial Services Committee oversees the entire financial services industry, including the securities, insurance, banking, and housing industries. The Committee also oversees the work of the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the SEC and other financial services regulators.

Legislative Agenda

"McCarthy is a national voice for gun control. But she is also a seasoned, well-rounded representative who has expanded her reach into health care and education. ... McCarthy has effectively courted support from both sides of the aisle by putting what?s good for people above partisan politics."

?Newsday Editorial, 10/25/02 "Putting People?s Needs Above Partisanship in 4th C.D."

Carolyn was elected to Congress because of her commonsense approach to the problems that face Long Island's working families, and she reflects this in her legislative agenda. A vocal and active proponent for tax relief for Long Island?s families, Carolyn has consistently voted to eliminate the marriage penalty tax, the death tax, and protect the child tax credit. She is also an advocate to cut capitol gains taxes.

As a nurse for 30 years, Carolyn has witnessed the problems in the health care system and sees HMO reform as a key solution. As one of three nurses in Congress, she is a leading advocate for prescription drug coverage for seniors and breast cancer patients, and increased cancer research funding.

Carolyn continues her efforts to reduce gun violence through legislation to enforce existing gun laws, research smart gun technology and close the gun show loophole. Carolyn also remains an outspoken advocate for victims of crime, and travels extensively to educate Americans on ways to reduce gun violence.

Long Island?s 4th Congressional District

"...McCarthy has grown as a politician. ...(she) can also bring home the federal dollars...and is quite visible in getting things done for her constituents."

?Herald Community Newspapers Newsday Editorial, 10/24/02 "Returning McCarthy to 4th DC Seat"

The Fourth Congressional District of New York is located on Long Island. It is a heavily suburban area with most of the residents commuting daily into New York City. The District includes Garden City, Hempstead, the civic center of Nassau County and the County Seat in Mineola. It encompasses the suburbs along the Queens line from New Hyde Park to Valley Stream. It also includes the Five Towns of Lawrence, Inwood, Cedarhurst, Hewlett and Woodmere. A major commercial center, the Fourth District is also home to thousands of small businesses.
