InfoBorn on the quaint, tiny island of Astypalea off the coast of Greece, Frank Skartados was the seventh of eight children. From his earliest memories, Frank remembers helping his father maintain his small farm that afforded his family a modest living, and that every day during the school year, he would walk five miles to school and back.

At age 14, on July 4, 1970, Frank arrived in New York City with his mother. Before landing, his plane circled over an area of land and water, which he later learned was the lush greenery and clear water of the Hudson River Valley. To Frank, this was the Promised Land he had always imagined the United States to be. He spent hours teaching himself English using translation dictionaries, eventually graduating from George Washington High School in upper Manhattan.

Frank was determined to continue his education but needed the funds to make it happen. So after four years of working in restaurants – owning one of them – he was able to put himself through the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, where he graduated with honors and a degree in Political Science while holding down a job in the Commandant’s Office of the New York Military Academy in Cornwall, NY.

After SUNY New Paltz, Frank went on to get his master’s degree in International Studies from the State University of California at Sacramento, followed by an internship at the United Nations at the Center Against Apartheid. He returned to the New York Military Academy for the next eight years to serve as chairman of the Health Department and a teacher of Environmental Studies and American History.

Since leaving the Academy 12 years ago, Frank has devoted his life to building a business by renovating properties in downtown Poughkeepsie, including building the Aegean Entertainment Center, the largest entertainment venue between Albany and New York City. Founder and president of the Academy Street Business Association in Poughkeepsie, Frank helped in the revitalization of the street’s business environment, which changed the negative perception of the area. In addition to his work with the Poughkeepsie Partnership – a go-between to promote the partnership of business and city government agencies – Frank also served on the mayor’s Promotions & Events Committee to help further promote and attract new people to the city of Poughkeepsie.

Currently, Frank is converting his farm in Milton, NY, to the new technology of aquaponics to show local farmers they can save their land – and make a living – by farming year-round using solar, wind and geothermal energy.
