InfoJohn Clifton is currently the LP state chair in New York. In 2000 he won the nomination (over two other LP contenders) from the LPNY to be their candidate for US Senate, where he ran against Hilary Clinton and Ric Lazio.

The week of his nomination Clifton received a 14-inch profile in the N.Y. Times, was covered by the AP and was mentioned hourly on news radio stations.

Clifton was the first African-American nominated for statewide office by the NYLP. He of course opposes affirmative action and also made eminent domain a key issue for reaching out to the black community, as he kicked off his campaign by speaking at a rally on behalf of the bullied St. Lukes Pentecostal Church in New Cassel, which was being threatened with eminent domain takeover by the Town of North Hempstead.

In 1994 he co-founded the Queens LP, chairing that affiliate for three years. In 1999 he ran for a seat on NYCs Community School Board District 28, serving Forest Hills, Kew Gardens and Jamaica (where he resides).

Clifton was born in Georgia but grew up in the NYC area. He attended the Parsons School of Design in Greenwich Village. (Parsons is part of New School University, as is the well-known Actors Studio of Drama.) While attending this very liberal school, he did extensive independent research on his path to becoming a libertarian.

After college he spent six years in the Navy serving on Poseidon and Trident II class submarines. Back as a civilian he continued a path of service by going into social work (now at a supervisory level) in homeless outreach, mental health, drug counseling and foster care prevention.

He is also active in network marketing and real estate investing and hes a certified personal trainer. He is currently editor for the LPQC News. He does as much writing and public speaking as he can, promoting libertarianism.
