InfoMark Eves lives in North Berwick, Maine with his wife Laura and two young children, Elaina (3) and Lucas (1). After meeting his wife in graduate school and both graduating with Masters degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy, they looked around the country and decided to make Maine their home where they would start a family of their own. Mark and Laura were attracted to Maine by its beauty, recreational opportunities, and a desire to be closer to family.

Mark Eves’ legislative experience includes advocating for children and families’ mental health issues at the State and Federal level. As the President of the Maine Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Mark has actively advocated for increasing access to healthcare for all Mainers, which is particularly important for those in rural areas. In addition to this leadership role, Mark has chaired the North Berwick Democrats for the last two years and serves on the North Berwick Budget Committee. Shortly after convening the Caucus in February, Mark was approached to run as the Democratic nominee for District 146.

Mark reports being motivated to run for State Representative out of his concern for the major issues that we must find solutions for: healthcare costs and inaccessibility, the current state of the economy in Maine, our struggling educational system, our dependency on foreign oil, and our distressed environment. Mark states that, “All policies, whether energy, education, healthcare, the environment or the economy, have a systemic impact on each other. Just one example that we are all learning more about is the interconnectedness of our fuel and food prices. As we have subsidized corn and wheat to produce bio-fuels we have unintentionally, and unfortunately, affected the price of a loaf of bread, a pound of beef, and a gallon of milk.”

As a father, friend, and family therapist Mark states that he “has had a unique opportunity to hear the struggles and challenges that face families and individuals in Maine. I understand that families are using credit cards to make purchases for everyday staples such as groceries and gas so that they can continue to make their mortgage and rent payments. The unfortunate common thread that currently holds us together as citizens is not our prosperity but our reliance on credit that is becoming more difficult to come by with the credit crunch. As the price of all commodities continues to rise-r(milk, bread, corn, wheat -- essentially anything that requires transporting) more of us need to rely on credit cards to buy groceries and basic necessities. Credit purchases of luxury items such as home entertainment systems and home furnishings have been replaced by purchases of food and gas.”

Mark believes that, “A systemic approach to policy making will help reduce shortsighted decisions and focus on long term solutions. Changing the course we are on in Maine and in the country will depend on our integrated response to our biggest problems.” Mark reports that his training in general systems theory will assist him in analyzing data, creating solutions, and implementing strategies that will help improve the lives of Maine residents.
