InfoJim Humphreys, a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District in West Virginia, has spent his career taking on the special interests and standing up for people.

As a State Senator and member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, Humphreys fought for working families, better health care and better schools. As an attorney, heโ€™s taken on the big asbestos and insurance companies for people โ€“ and won. In Congress, he will be a fighter for West Virginia.

Born in Charleston and raised in Nitro, Jim Humphreys is a lifelong West Virginian. His father was a garbage collector and his mother a clerk, and they taught him the values of hard work, respect and responsibility. A student of West Virginia public schools, Humphreys graduated from West Virginia University and earned his law degree from George Washington University.

In 1982 Jim was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates from Kanawha County and was re-elected in 1984, 1986 and 1988. In 1989 Governor Gaston Caperton appointed Jim to fill a vacancy in the West Virginia Senate from Kanawha County, where he won re-election in 1990. In the House of Delegates, he served as Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Revision and as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary where he protected the civil justice system.

As a member of the Legislature, he voted for the Omnibus Health Care Act of 1989, which would have increased medical coverage for children and the poor. He also was a strong advocate for education. During his tenure he earned a high score with the West Virginia Education Association, voting with the association 89 percent of the time. He has been endorsed previously by the WVEA and the AFT, and already has received the endorsement of the AFT for the 2002 election.

Jim represents asbestos victims in several states, including West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia Bar Association, the Kanawha County Bar Association, the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Law and Medicine Committee of the West Virginia State Bar.
