Info | Michael DenDekker was elected to the New York State Assembly on November 4, 2008. He represents the 34th Assembly District, which includes Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst and Woodside in Queens County. It has been reported that the 34th Assembly District is the most ethnically diverse district in the entire state.
Mr. DenDekker was born in Jackson Heights and attended Our Lady of Fatima Grammar School and Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School. After graduation Mr. DenDekker attended the State University of New York at Farmingdale and majored in Automotive Technology. Mr. DenDekker has been very active in his community. He was elected district leader in 2002, and has served as a community board member, the chairman of the Neighborhood Advisory Board, and a past deputy chief in the Jackson Heights-Elmhurst Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Mr. DenDekker has had many jobs in the community since his youth. He worked as a paperboy delivering the Long Island Press and as a shoe salesman for Thom McCann. After college he worked as a banquet manager for Dante Caterers and an account representative for MetLife. In 1995 he joined the New York City Department of Sanitation and was assigned to household collection of refuse and recycling in Woodside. Between 1998 and 2002 he worked part-time as a district representative for New York State Assemblywoman Margaret Markey. In March 2001, he was promoted to the rank of supervisor in the Department of Sanitation and was assigned to the Bureau of Public Information and Community Affairs. After the events of September 11, 2001, Mr. DenDekker was detached to the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management as a public information officer and assigned to the Joint Information Center. In this capacity, Mr. DenDekker was responsible for assisting with the proper dissemination of information and statistics as they related to the attacks on the World Trade Center. In March 2003, Mr. DenDekker was given additional responsibilities as a special projects coordinator, working on the Ready NY campaign, Public Service announcements and the OEM Speakers Bureau. He has received Certificates of Achievement in Weapons of Mass Destruction, Basic Incident Command, Leadership and Influence, Emergency Program Manager, Decision Making and Problem Solving. He has also received unit citations in Public Information for his work during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Crash of Flight 587.
In March 2006, Mr. DenDekker retired from the DSNY and his assignment at OEM to take an appointment as the facilities manager for the New York City Council. In this position he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of all city council member office facilities and also assisted in the operations of City Hall.
Mr. DenDekker is also an accomplished actor. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has appeared in several films and television shows. He and his wife Angela have four children – Michael, Linda, Elizabeth and Jason, who is married to Jessica – and have one grandchild, Jasen.
