InfoHelping Californians get back to work is a top focus for John A. Pérez while he serves as California’s 68th Assembly Speaker. Pérez’ first official acts included cutting the Assembly’s operating budget by 15%, banning special interests from texting Assemblymembers during floor votes and pushing legislation that will help create new jobs in California.

Speaker Pérez has pledged the budget will not be written behind closed doors in “Big 5” meetings, but with public input and independent review. To accomplish that, he plans a series of budget hearings throughout the state so all Californians have the opportunity to offer their ideas and tell legislators how the budget proposals will affect their lives.

John A. Pérez has dedicated his career to helping California’s families succeed. Prior to being elected to the Assembly, Pérez served as UFCW political director. Growing up in the working class communities of El Sereno and Highland Park, John’s parents taught him the values of hard work and community service. John has channeled that passion into fighting to create jobs, expand health care and protect basic rights like an eight-hour day with overtime.

During his first term, Pérez has worked to improve the quality of life for his constituents in the 46th Assembly District. In the City of Maywood, water quality was a top concern where tap water often came out contaminated with high levels of manganese and so severely discolored it was brown. Working with residents, John was able get AB 890, The City of Maywood Safe Drink Water Act, signed by the Governor last August. The measure will require the three local water companies serving the area to clean up the water, and make these companies accountable by requiring public hearings and annual water quality statements.

John became politically active as a high school student over twenty years ago successfully helping to organize students against the proposed East Los Angeles prison. As a member of the Redevelopment Commission, he helped lead the effort at the Community Redevelopment Agency to turn that same site into a Green Tech Center that creates jobs and serves as a business incubator.

As Speaker, John understands we must continue to innovate so Californians are ready to take advantage of jobs in fields that are hiring now. That’s why he introduced AB 2385, which will create public-private partnerships with community colleges to allow students in Nursing and Allied Health programs to shorten the time they spend in school by guaranteeing access to the classes they need to graduate.

Knowing that opportunity and a path to success are not always easy to find in our community, John has worked tirelessly to create jobs for local residents. He helped lead the effort to mandate a local hire agreement requiring 30% of all major construction jobs to be dedicated to local residents and those in need, providing those individuals with valuable experience and training in skilled professions. He also played a leading role in the increase of the California minimum wage.

John’s work on behalf of the community has been recognized by various elected officials and organizations. Prior to his election to the Assembly and being elected Speaker a year later, his leadership was recognized by three mayors, including Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who appointed John to major Los Angeles City Commissions. State Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg appointed John to serve on the Blue Ribbon panel studying state initiative reform. John also received a Presidential appointment to serve on the President’s Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS.

In addition to his work in the labor movement, John serves as an elected member of the Democratic National Committee. John has served as a board member for the California League of Conservation Voters, AIDS Project Los Angeles, the Latino Coalition against AIDS, the California Center for Regional Leadership, and the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.
