Info | MALLORY, Rufus, a Representative from Oregon; born in Coventry, Chenango County, N.Y., January 10, 1831; attended the common schools and the Alfred (N.Y.) University; moved to New London, Iowa, and taught school 1855-1858; moved to Roseburg, Oreg., in 1858 and continued teaching; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1860 and commenced practice in Salem, Oreg.; district attorney of the first judicial district in 1860 and of the third district 1862-1866; member of the State house of representatives in 1862; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1869); was not a candidate for renomination in 1868; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1868 and 1888; resumed the practice of law in Salem; member of the State house of representatives in 1872 and served as speaker; United States district attorney 1874-1882; commissioned as special agent of the United States Government at Singapore, British Malaya; returned to Portland, Oreg., and resumed the practice of law in 1883; died in Portland, Multonomah County, Oreg., April 30, 1914; remains were cremated and the ashes deposited in the vaults of the Portland Cremation Association.
