InfoJay Inslee has led a life of personal integrity and public service. Jay has not only embraced the challenges of raising a family, but has worked tirelessly to serve his community with innovative and effective approaches to our public challenges and opportunities.

Jay was born on February 9, 1951 in Seattle. He graduated from Ingraham High School, went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Washington, and eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Willamette University School of Law in 1976. He has used his legal expertise not only to succeed in private practice but also to serve the local community in a variety of ways from serving as the chair of school board campaigns to serving as a member of New Valley Osteopathic Hospital Board of Directors. He was a prosecuting attorney at Peters, Fowler and Inslee in Selah, WA from 1976 to 1992, and an attorney at Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell, Malanca, Peterson and Daheim from 1995 to 1996.

Jay met his wife, Trudi, in high school, and they are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this year. The Inslees have three children: Jack, age 25, who is a carpenter; Connor, age 23, who is a student at Seattle Community College; and Joe, age 16, a high school soccer and lacrosse player. The Inslees enjoy outdoor activities, and some of Jay's favorites include kayaking and playing basketball.

Between 1988 and 1992, Jay served two terms as representative for the 14th Legislative District in the Washington State House of Representatives. He worked to focus the state government's activities on the interests of the people as Vice-Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, and as a member of the Housing Committee, the Judiciary Committee, and the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee.

Seeing the opportunity to continue his record of advancing issues important to Washingtonians, Jay took on the job of representing the state's 4th Congressional District in the United State House of Representatives in 1992. During his tenure, he sat on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Recognizing the importance of healthy waterways to our state's future, Jay was the chief architect behind the Yakima River Enhancement Bill. He also realized the potential for Washington's businesses overseas, and successfully fought to open the Japanese market to Washington apple farmers.

In 1995, Jay and his family returned home to the Puget Sound area, and moved onto Bainbridge Island. Again pursuing his desire to serve his neighbors, Jay successfully won a seat to represent this state's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. Congress. Jay serves on the Committee on Resources and the Committee on Banking and Financial Services.

Jay's track record during the last term in Congress reflects an unparalleled commitment to financial privacy, homeland security, environmental issues, public education, and technological innovation.

The debate about financial privacy in the Banking Committee began with Jay. He wrote legislation to prevent banks from selling our personal financial information to telemarketers, and also passed legislation requiring federal agencies to report to Congress on how they track the personal information of those who visit government web sites.

Jay is a national leader in protecting our clean air and water. His record has not gone unappreciated--the League of Conservation Voters has twice recognized him as an "Environmental Champion" and the Sierra Club has given him a "100 percent" environmental rating.

Jay is recognized as a tireless supporter of Microsoft and the worldwide protection of intellectual property. His leadership was critical to the passage of legislation to make electronic signatures legal, by adding consumer protections to the original legislation, and by working to educate other legislators about current issues in the technology industry.

Jay continues to advocate for his neighbors and constituents, and to work against special interests in our nation's capitol.
