Info | It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you as a member of the Peoria Unified School District Governing Board over the past four years. During my tenure on the Board I have been able, even from a minority position, to accomplish many of the things I promised to address when I ran for the Board in 2004.
High school campuses are now closed during lunch keeping our students safer, our campuses more secure and protecting our taxpayers from the potential liability a serious accident may bring.
I advocated for, and we now include, a true “call the public” as a regular agenda item. Community members may now come to a meeting and address the Board about any concern they wish to bring forward. In the past the community was only permitted to speak to the issues the Board placed on the agenda.
We now have an agreement in place with the Challenger Space Center ending the school district’s financial support of the Center. A plan is in place for the district to receive “mission credits” for our students while repaying the debt.
The district budget is now receiving closer scrutiny than it has had from previous boards over the past several years. More information about our budget is available to you, our community, through the district website than ever before. We need to continue to work to bring a greater degree of accountability, transparency and community collaboration to our budgeting process.
Looking to the future, we need to offer more educational choices to our community. We know all students don’t have the same needs, learn the same way or have the same goals. We also know that parents don’t all look for exactly the same thing in a school for their children. We have the resources and the facilities and the talent within our staff to offer our parents more educational choices to better serve their children.
We must empower our principals and school site councils to become the leaders and decision makers for their sites. We should allow them to address the educational needs of their community. It goes without saying but I’ll say it any way – while maintaining and improving the success of their students.
Finally, we MUST hire a CFO (Chief Financial Officer) who will oversee and evaluate all aspects of the business and financial operations of the district. This position has been left open since the previous financial officer retired over two years ago. Since then the board has found out that budgets have been overspent, budget carryovers have all but evaporated leaving us no “cushion” for increasing prices. While I believe that administrative positions should be kept to a minimum, an organization which has an operational budget in excess of $220 millions dollars is remiss in not having a CFO.
Thank you for your support. I look forward to serving you for the next four years.
