In 2007, Rep. McDonald received a National Angels in Adoption Award from the United State Congress.

A 1965 graduate of St. Francis High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rep. McDonald also received an undergraduate degree in Advertising Communication.

Born September 17, 1946 in Omaha, Nebraska, Rep. McDonald currently resides in Independence with his wife, Lois. They have 12 children – Michelle, Brian, Michael, Lauren, Matthew, James, Justin, Miranda, Anna, Danica, Erin and Derek.
