InfoI’m Bob Bastress, candidate for West Virginia State Supreme Court.

I am best known as a law professor--a teacher of law and the leading expert on the West Virginia Constitution.

I’ve been a West Virginia College of Law Professor for 30 years, but I’ve also been in the courtroom protecting the interest of West Virginians. I’ve fought to keep community schools open, and garbage out of our state.

I’ve worked on behalf of seniors, working families, and the poor to ensure that all West Virginians have access to fair, affordable, and impartial justice.

My mission is to bring integrity and intellectual rigor to our West Virginia Supreme Court. Public confidence in the Court is at an all-time low, and for good reason.

When we see pictures of a sitting Justice vacationing on the Riviera with a wealthy corporate CEO whose company has a case before the Court with a potential $70 million claim to pay, we have a problem.

It’s not surprising that the public thinks money has too much of an influence in judicial elections. And it’s no wonder the public believes that politics influence the Court’s decisions.

I pledge to follow Article III, section 17 of the West Virginia Constitution which guarantees that “justice shall be administered without sale, denial or delay.” Justice should be for everyone, not just the wealthy few.

Over the last eight years, the court has accepted fewer and fewer cases for review. The caseload has dropped nearly 80% since 2000. At the same time, pay has gone up--Justices got a 27% pay raise in 2005, increasing their pay to $121,000. Justices work fewer days and take more vacations. If elected, I will work as hard as you do to restore both the work ethic and the general ethics of the court.

I am married to Barbara Evans Fleischauer, a member of the House of Delegates. I have two children, Rob, who clerks for a federal judge in Charleston, and, Sarah, who is a senior at Morgantown High. Our family grows a large garden every year at our home on the Evans Family farm in Morgantown. I am also a long-time member of Honest Abe’s Used Cars softball team.

Our campaign has truly been a grass-roots effort with neighbors and friends from around the state putting out yard signs and making small contributions. I am doing a great deal of travel around the state so that I can meet with voters and get out my message.

For more information on my career and my campaign, I invite you to visit my website, www.bastressforjustice.com. You can also call at 304-554-3345.

If you would like to volunteer, display a yard sign, or contribute, I would appreciate your support. Together we can take back our Supreme Court.

On May 13th vote for me, Bob Bastress, to restore integrity to the court and prove that justice is not for sale in West Virginia.
