InfoBorn and raised in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis, Dr. John P. McGoff has been a lifelong Hoosier. After attending St. Pius X Catholic Grade School with his five brothers and sisters, he graduated from North Central High School in 1977. While in high school, he lettered in wrestling and was the Marion County Champion in the 105 lb. weight class in 1974. When he wasn’t in school or at wrestling practice, he volunteered in the Wishard Hospital Emergency Department, and it is there that he decided to become a physician.

In 1980, at the age of 20, Dr. McGoff graduated from Indiana University with a degree in biology and then matriculated into the IU School of Medicine. During his third year of medical school, he joined the Medical Officer Training Corps with the Indiana National Guard, and he has been serving in the military ever since. Upon completion of med school in 1984, he performed his three-year residency in Emergency Medicine at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. While working there, he met a young nurse named Karen Strom, now his wife of 21 years. They have a 11-year-old daughter, Ava, who attends St. Pius X Catholic Grade School like her father did before her. After finishing his residency in 1987, Dr. McGoff returned to Indianapolis with his new bride and began working in the ER at Community Hospital, where he has since helped tens of thousands of patients from many different backgrounds.

He has continued with the National Guard, rising to the rank of Colonel, and also serves as the Air Guard Assistant to the United States Airforce Surgeon General at European Headquarters. He has deployed extensively around the world with operational tours in Turkey, Jordan, Bahrain and Germany, and has currently logged over 500 hours of flight time. In 2001, he participated in, and graduated from, the Air Force’s Air War College. In the summer of 2006, he flew missions into battlefields in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a flight surgeon for the Air Force.

In addition to his roles as a family man, physician and military serviceman, Dr. McGoff remains an active member of the community in many other ways. He has served on a variety of national, state and local boards including the Board of Directors for Community Hospitals (where he is also Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee), the Marion County Forensic Science Commission, the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

He has also been active in Republican Politics in Marion County and Indiana for many years, starting as an Election Day poll worker before becoming a precinct committeemen, ward chairman, and alternate delegate for the Republican National Convention on two occasions. In 1996, he was elected Marion County Coroner, serving two terms and cleaning up an office that by most accounts needed to be turned around. In 2002, he was a Republican candidate for Indiana’s Secretary of State. In 2004, he served Governor Mitch Daniels as a healthcare policy advisor for his campaign, and as a member of the Indiana Department of Health Transition Team following Daniels’ victory. In 2006, he traveled with Lt. Governor Becky Skillman on a trade-mission to Guatemala, helping to forge economic development relationships between Indiana and Central America.

On February 20, 2007, Dr. McGoff formally announced his intention to run for Congress in Indiana’s 5th District.
