InfoAs a Colonel of Marines, I have served all over the world and been involved in many aspects of the current wars we are fighting. From service in Afghanistan and Iraq, to the Pentagon for the Quadrennial Defense Review, and at home serving at Northern Command where plans are developed for the defense of our homeland. No one in this race has the depth of experience in defense and national security issues.

At home in Colorado, I have served in city, county and state governments. My focus has always been on limiting government, but also ensuring that government is effective in the areas we expect it to be. As Mayor, I led the successful effort to build an entirely new water system for the city, improving the roads, and making them safer with sidewalks, lighting, and community policing. At the same time, taxes were lowered substantially. I eliminated the municipal sales and use tax on cars, use taxes on building materials, and lowered property taxes substantially.

As Arapahoe County Commissioner, the focus was on transportation - better streets, and a jail big enough to keep criminals off them.

The portion of the budget dedicated to roadway improvements increased in real terms every year as Commissioner. I also led the successful effort to expand the county jail. This was done without increasing taxes, and with debt that was approved by the voters in compliance with TABOR. This debt is now well on its way to being paid off.

While Commissioner, I led the effort to cut the Business Personal Property Tax in the county. We lowered this onerous tax each year for four years.
As State Senator, I have argued forcefully and effectively against many of the nanny state ideas advocated by those in the Democrat majority, while also standing up for private property rights and the 2nd Amendment.

Five of seven bills where I served as prime Senate sponsor in my freshman year in the Senate were passed and signed by the Governor.

P. J. O’Rourke quipped that “Republicans are the ones who say government doesn’t work, then get elected and prove it.” I have governed conservatively but effectively for over 14 years. Government can work, if its roles are limited.
