Info | JONES, John Sills, a Representative from Ohio; born near St. Paris, Champaign County, Ohio, February 12, 1836; attended the public schools; was graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio, in 1855; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced practice in Delaware, Ohio; prosecuting attorney for Delaware County in 1860 and 1861; served during the Civil War as first lieutenant and captain in the Union Army 1861-1864; reenlisted to command the One Hundred and Seventy-fourth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in September 1864; mustered out July 7, 1865; resumed the practice of law; mayor of Delaware, Ohio, in 1866; again prosecuting attorney for Delaware County 1866-1872; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1879); was not a candidate for renomination in 1878; member of the State house of representatives 1879-1884; again resumed the practice of law in Delaware, Ohio, and died there April 11, 1903; interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
