| Info | GUNCKEL, Lewis B., a Representative from Ohio; born in Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio, October 15, 1826; pursued preparatory studies; was graduated from Farmer’s College in 1848 and from the law school of Cincinnati College in 1851; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Dayton, Ohio, in 1851; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856; member of the State senate 1862-1865; appointed by Congress a member of the Board of Managers of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1864; reappointed in 1870 to serve six years; in 1871 appointed United States commissioner to investigate frauds practiced on the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Creek Indians; elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, October 3, 1903; interment in Woodland Cemetery.
